Women Try Korean Skincare For A Week

Women Try Korean Skincare For A Week

- Honestly if someone
told me rubbing cow shit on your face would get rid of acne. I'd be like, "Let's split the
Uber to the nearest farm." (Edgy techno music) - We're trying Korean
Skin Care for a week. - I am pretty obsessed with
all skin care products. I'd say most of my
money goes towards that.

- I have combination skin. Dry on my cheeks, and
completely oily everywhere else. - I have been getting
random breakouts since I was about 19, 20. I just don't want acne
anymore, come at me.

I'm ready to be a K-pop Star. - I'm Dr. Annie Chiu and
I am a dermatologist. Korean women are very, very committed to beauty and skin care.

Everyone's heard by now
about these 10 to 12 step Korean skin care rituals
because they really enjoy and feel like they're
taking care of themselves really inside and outside. - Oh, oh. - Oh shit. - That's a lot.

- A two-step cleansing
ritual or double cleansing basically you wash your face, first with like oil-based cleanser which takes off eye makeup, eyeshadow. - I'm Lauren Conrad in my home right now. (Cissy laughing)
(Sheridan sobbing) - Then you follow it with a secondary step that cleanses the more organic residues that are on your face while leaving it still really sort of pH balanced and nourished without stripping it of
all its natural oils. - Do you hear this? - I know we're literally churning butter.

- I'm making butter. - Oh my god you go crazy.
- It's so foamy. - Acne prone skin tends to
run a little bit oilier. You wanna look for exfoliating products or products that have Retinoids.

These products turn over
the skin a little bit faster which prevents pore clogging,
and dissolves dead cells. - I feel like a puppy is just rubbing its body against my face. Time for toner, let's do this. - Let's tone it up.

- They may be in Korean skin care as well, but they tend to have slightly
more gentle formulations because Asian skin is more irritable. - It smells so good. - It smells so good. Essence for you, serum for me.

- An Essence typically is a
little bit lighter in texture. It usually doesn't have
a very high concentration of active ingredients, but more it's about rebalancing the skin. - Mine doesn't smell like anything. - Well you just got
really good smelling ones for the last two so just calm down.

- A serum is a super potent
step in a skin care regimen. - Oh. - That's nice. - Oh, that smells like, suede.
- Yeah.

- You do end up stripping
the skin of its natural pH. So they'll have multiple steps
just to reestablish that pH. - Bringing out the Baskin
Robbins sample spoon. - Should we go get ice cream,
let's go get some ice cream.

- Let's get ice cream. - Let's get ice cream. - We deserve it, this was a lot of work. - There's also a much heavier emphasis on sunscreens and SPFs which
is probably why they continue to maintain looking so fabulous.

- It's super like watery
which I'm a fan of. - That was long, but there's more. Bring on the mask, thank you, thank you. - Sheet masks are kind of a
like a cheat way of getting high quality ingredients in really quick is based around an occlusive effect.

So whenever the skin
has an ingredient on it driving the ingredients
deeper into the skin. - I love this, it's gonna be
like a nice solid 30 minutes. - I'm looking forward to this week, but if I ever wake up late
this is gonna be a problem. - Let's do it.

- Let go. - The fact that the routine is so long had its pros and cons. I'm home, and I'm very tired, and now I have to do like a fucking 20 minute skin care routine. - Let's talk about how long it takes to double cleanse am and pm.

I literally can't, that's
just too much time. Definitely woke up late this morning and I have to go through my
entire Korean beauty routine before I head out. I'm going to be even more
late than I am already. So that' great, but at least
I'm taking care of my skin.

You know. - Loves the mask. I was like a rave on my face. Usually like sheet masks are
very soothing and moisturizing.

It feels minty, my face is tingling. - Pumping that little
whipping maker every morning was the most monotonous,
but like weirdly satisfying moment of my morning and night routine. - I noticed how a lot
of like my little bumps started to clear up. My face feels so glowy right
now, that mask was bomb.

- One thing that I really am
excited about using more often were the sheet masks that we had. The directions recommended
putting it in the 'frigerator beforehand so that it would be cold. And it was the most
refreshing feeling ever. - It has been a week,
it was a very long week.

Mostly because I suddenly had to do like five hours worth of skin care. - Definitely found out that
my routine isn't as extensive as I thought it was compared
to the Korean version. - I noticed as the week progressed that a lot of my acne was kinda going away. - I've really noticed
overall color correction.

The redness and the patchiness
of my skin has evened out, but I'm very excited to
get back to my old routine and just incorporate the
sunscreen and the sheet masks every once in awhile. - I'm definitely gonna keep doing it. My face has never been cleaner. Oreo, do you think I look like J.Lo? Say nothing if I look like J.Lo.

Oh. I don't need a Halloween
costume next year. I'm just gonna go as a slutty bear..

Why pH matters for AHAs and acids in skincareLab Muffin Beauty Science

Why pH matters for AHAs and acids in skincareLab Muffin Beauty Science

Hi I'm Michelle and I have a blog called Lab Muffin. Today I'm going to be talking about why pH matters for alpha hydroxy acids and vitamin C. There are many acidic active ingredients in skincare: alpha hydroxy acids like glycolic, lactic and malic acids; beta hydroxy acid or salicylic acid; vitamin C. Or L-ascorbic acid; hyaluronic acid, retinoic acid and many more.

You might have heard that some acid products need to be a certain pH to work. Why is that? Here's the science behind the skin care tip. Acids are molecules that can give up hydrogen ions or H+. For example, sulfuric acid or battery acid is H2SO4, hydrochloric acid in your stomach is HCl, and acetic acid in vinegar is CH3COOH.

All of them can break up to give up hydrogen ions like so. You can see that the acids in skincare also have hydrogen that can break off. The top layer of the skin, the stratum corneum, is made up of cells embedded in oily lipids much like bricks in mortar. Oil is non-polar, which means it isn't charged, while water is polar, which means it's partially charged.

According to the rule of thumb for solubility "like dissolves like" - that is, things that are uncharged like to mingle with things that are also uncharged, but they'll repel things that are charged. This means that in general, charged particles will not get into skin easily. When acids haven't given up their hydrogen ions they're uncharged so they're able to penetrate the stratum corneum. The uncharged version is called the free acid.

But if they've broken up or dissociated into a hydrogen ion and a negatively charged anion, they're too polar to get through the non-polar stratum corneum very easily. The extent to which the acid is broken up depends on a few things. Let's talk about the two that are most important in skincare. First, the strength of the bond holding the hydrogen ion to the rest of the acid.

This is measured by something called the pKa of the acid. For example hydrochloric acid has a very low pKa, so in water-based solutions it's almost 100% broken up. Acetic acid on the other hand has a much higher pKa so in water only about 1 in 100 acidic hydrogens have broken off. We call this strong and weak.

Skincare acids are all weak acids so they're varying amounts of broken up. Secondly there's also the pH. Of the overall product. PH measures the total concentration of hydrogen ions and low pH means more hydrogen.

The hydrogen ions can come from the skincare acid or from other acids added to the mixture. Let's consider a product where half the acid molecules are in the free acid form so half can get into the skin. If the pH is lower, there's more hydrogen ions around, which means more will attach onto the acid molecules giving more of the uncharged free acid, which can penetrate. This means that a lower concentration of acid at a lower pH will give the equivalent amount of free acid as a higher concentration at a higher pH.

For example, a product with 10% glycolic acid at pH 3 would have 8.7% Of the product in uncharged form, whereas at pH 4.5 You'd need 50% glycolic acid to get a similar amount. In summary, low pH will always increase the amount of uncharged acid that will penetrate the skin, and the pH required to get a high concentration of uncharged acid depends on which acid we're talking about. Why not use a super low pH then? You'd be correct in thinking that if we used a really low pH that would give us the maximum amount of uncharged acid that could penetrate. Unfortunately, skin likes to be at around pH 5 and very low pH can cause chemical burns.

For leave-on products, it's recommended that you use alpha hydroxy acids at a pH of less than four and a concentration between 4 and 10 percent, and ascorbic acid at a pH of around 3.5 And a concentration between 5 and 20 percent. What about the other acids? It gets more complex here because the rest of the acid molecule makes a big difference. Hyaluronic acid is a large polymer made up of thousands of these units, so it's way too big to get into the skin anyway. And it doesn't need to - it's a humectant moisturizer which means it sits on top of skin and holds on to water to keep your skin moist.

For retinoic acid, the rest of the molecule is non-polar enough that the charge doesn't make a big difference. For salicylic acid or beta hydroxy acid it's often recommended that you use a product with a pH of less than 3.5 And a concentration of 1-2% but there's some evidence that it's also non-polar enough that pH. Doesn't matter. That's a quick introduction to pH and acids in skincare.

I definitely haven't covered everything because delivering things through skin is a huge huge topic. I hope you found this video useful, and if you'd like to see more videos like this from me in the future, please comment and let me know!.

I will show you one by one the first one is I carry primer from Makeup Forever series Hydrating and I bring my favorite foundation from L'oreal Infallible Pro-matte.

The colors are like this actually, this looks really natural and less pigmented but I am lazy to bring Kat Von D, actually it is really good and pigmented, good for a gorgeous makeup look but, for travelling, the size is too big, so I decide to bring this compact and small product and I like this product for contouring my nose as this results a natural look for blush, I bring two from Becca Cosmetic both because the packages are small, colors are good pigmented and last for all day the first color that I carry is tigerlily. The color is orange the second color that I carry is a more pink one, Snapdragon for highlighter, I carry small size from Fenty Beauty this one is Killawatt Hustla Baby still a few more products remained, the last ones are lipstick for the nude color, I bring lipstick from Etude House. I like to combine both I also bring the pink purple lipstick, I apply it right now on my lips No number in the package, but I will try to put it on the description box The color is more like purple, pink, muted magenta, I don't know how to explain the color I also bring 3CE. The color is orange.

When I want my makeup to be orange, I apply this lipstick 114 Rose I also bring liptint, Maybelline no. 7 This is still new. I recently open this. The color is more like coral I also bring lipgloss, Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb.

This is a really good lipgloss, the color is beige nude. It looks very luxurious using this on my lips, feels gorgeous that's why I bring this and the last one is accessories, curler for eyelashes, pinset to take out eyebrow and put on eyelashes and small scissor to cut the edge of eyelashes, and so on.
